Year 8 is the year the curriculum turns abstract and motivation often dips. The Victorian Curriculum for Year 8 covers index laws, expanding and factorising simple algebraic expressions, solving linear equations, ratio and rates, percentages including profit, loss and mark-ups, Pythagoras' theorem, congruence, the area of circles and the volume of prisms, and probability with Venn diagrams and two-way tables. In English, students analyse how texts represent people and ideas, write text responses with structured argument, analyse persuasive language, and write creatively with deliberate choices. Science covers cells and body systems, elements, compounds and mixtures, physical and chemical change, forms of energy, and rocks and minerals.
For some families the defining event of Year 8 is the selective-entry exam, sat in June for Year 9 entry to Melbourne High, Mac.Robertson Girls', Nossal and Suzanne Cory (which is in Werribee and draws heavily from Melbourne's west). It tests reading, maths, verbal and numerical reasoning and writing, pitched above year level and under strict time. For everyone else, Year 8 is the year to make sure the algebra is genuinely understood, because Year 9 builds linear graphs, trigonometry and surds directly on it, and the year to keep a student engaged when the novelty of secondary school has worn off.

Year 8 maths is algebra plus everything that needs it. Index laws, expanding brackets, factorising by taking out a common factor, solving linear equations with variables on both sides, rearranging simple formulas and using algebra in ratio, rate and percentage problems are all Year 8 content. Pythagoras' theorem arrives too, along with the area of circles, volume of prisms, congruence and probability with Venn diagrams. Our Year 8 sessions follow the school's unit but check the Year 7 foundations (integers, fractions, simple equations) first, because most Year 8 algebra errors are Year 7 errors.

Year 8 English deepens the analytical work begun in Year 7. Students write text responses that argue a contention across several paragraphs, analyse how persuasive texts use language and images to position an audience, and write creative pieces with a clear intention. The Victorian Curriculum also expects Year 8 students to use evidence precisely (embedded quotations, not dropped ones) and to control tone and register. Our tutors work on the school's actual texts and tasks, mark paragraphs to criteria in the session, and build a personal list of the student's recurring errors.

Year 8 science is the first year with a lot of content: cells and their organelles, body systems (digestive, respiratory, circulatory), elements, compounds and mixtures and the periodic table, physical and chemical change, forms and transfers of energy, and rocks and the rock cycle. Tests reward precise terms and structured explanations, and practical reports carry real marks. Our Year 8 science sessions follow the school's current unit, teach the concept with diagrams, then practise define, describe, explain and compare questions and data analysis, so the student learns to write what the marks require.

Year 8 sessions are an hour, one-to-one or in a small group of up to four at the same level. Maths hours run retrieval, teaching point, guided practice with the tutor watching setting out, then a short independent set. English hours produce a piece of analytical or persuasive writing on the school's task, marked live and partly rewritten. Science hours combine concept teaching on the current unit with exam-style questions and a practical report when one is due. Selective-entry sessions add timed reasoning and writing sets. A progress note follows every session.
Small groups of up to four at the same level suit most Year 8 students for maths and science, and for selective-entry practice sets. One-to-one is better for English, for students who have disengaged and need to rebuild confidence, and for the first months of selective preparation. Online works well for all subjects at Year 8; many students prefer it, and families in the west use the Truganina centre for revision blocks and holiday programs.
For Year 8, small groups (up to four students at the same level) are from $25 an hour and one-to-one is $35–$40 an hour. Across all year levels, small groups are from $25 an hour and one-to-one is $35 to $45 an hour, with VCE at the top of the range. Here is a typical week for a Year 8 student doing two subjects with us. Most families run one session a week per subject; two a week is worth it in the term before NAPLAN, a scholarship or selective test, or the VCE exams.

Start as early in Year 7 or Year 8 as possible. The exam covers reading, maths, verbal and numerical reasoning and writing, pitched at Year 8 to 9 level, under time. Algebra: index laws, expanding, factorising and solving linear equations. Year 9 linear graphs, surds and trigonometry all assume them, and Year 10 quadratics assume Year 9. Setting out matters as much as the content.
If the student is losing marks on tests despite understanding the topic, yes. Year 8 science is where written explanation starts to decide marks, and it is a skill we teach directly. Year 8 cells and chemistry also come back in Years 9 and 10.
