Year 6 is the year primary school finishes and the secondary curriculum starts to show. The Victorian Curriculum expects a Year 6 student to work with integers, to use order of operations, to add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators, to multiply and divide decimals, to calculate percentages and simple discounts, to meet ratios, to plot points on the Cartesian plane, to use angle rules and to work with volume and probability. In English the expectation is analysis: how authors position readers, how texts are structured for purpose, persuasive writing with counterarguments, and cohesive, well-punctuated writing across genres.
The pressure points in Year 6 are external. Scholarship and entrance tests for Year 7 entry are sat mostly between February and May, and they test maths and reading above year level, verbal and numerical reasoning, and timed writing. Then the transition itself: a child who leaves Year 6 with shaky fractions, slow number facts or no idea how to write an analytical paragraph will meet Year 7 maths and English with six teachers instead of one and nobody watching closely. Year 6 maths is the bridge to secondary. Fractions with unlike denominators, decimals in all four operations, percentages of amounts, ratio, integers on a number line and the order of operations are all Year 6 content, and all of them are assumed by Year 7 algebra. Our Year 6 sessions make sure each is understood, not just remembered as a rule, then practise mixed problems so the student can decide which skill a question needs. Number facts are checked in the first session and drilled if they are not automatic, because Year 7 teachers will not do it.

Year 6 English introduces the analytical thinking secondary English is built on. The Victorian Curriculum expects a Year 6 reader to explain how an author uses language and structure to influence a reader, to compare texts on the same topic, and to evaluate evidence. Writing expectations include persuasive pieces that anticipate and rebut the other side, narratives with real tension, and control of paragraphs, punctuation and vocabulary across genres. Our tutors teach a simple analytical paragraph structure (point, evidence, explanation) in Year 6 so it is familiar by the time Year 7 demands it.

Year 6 science covers electricity and circuits, living things and their environment, reversible and irreversible changes, and sudden geological changes and extreme weather. Most schools assess it through an investigation write-up or a report, and where a family asks we use that as the informative-writing task for the week rather than running a separate science session. The Year 7 science content is a real step up, and we cover the inquiry skills (variables, fair testing, graphing) in Term 4 for students who want a head start.

Year 6 sessions are an hour, one-to-one or in a small group of up to four. Maths hours begin with a mixed retrieval set, move to the week's teaching point with worked examples, then guided and independent practice, finishing with a short timed set. English hours pair a text and questions with a teaching point and a piece of writing marked in the session. Scholarship preparation adds timed reasoning sets and feedback on writing under time. Every session ends with a progress note to you and a short home task.
Small groups of up to four are popular for Year 6 and suit scholarship preparation well, since students practise timed sets together and pace each other. One-to-one is better in the first months of scholarship preparation, for students more than a year behind, and for the Term 4 transition work when the focus is very individual. Online works well for Year 6 in every subject; the Truganina centre is used mostly for in-person revision blocks before a test.
For Year 6, small groups (up to four students at the same level) are from $25 an hour and one-to-one is $35 an hour. Across all year levels, small groups are from $25 an hour and one-to-one is $35 to $45 an hour, with VCE at the top of the range. Plans are monthly, you choose how many sessions a week, and you can cancel any time. The Skills Check and the consultation are free. Online and in-person sessions cost the same.
Here is a typical week for a Year 6 student doing two subjects with us. Most families run one session a week per subject; two a week is worth it in the term before NAPLAN, a scholarship or selective test, or the VCE exams.
