This page is for parents of a Year 2 student (aged 7 and 8) weighing up tutoring. It covers what the curriculum expects this year, the milestones and pressure points, the topics we cover, how a Year 2 session runs, whether a small group or one-to-one suits this age, prices and a typical week. Year 2 is the last year before formal testing starts, and the year the curriculum quietly gets harder. In maths the Victorian Curriculum expects a Year 2 child to work with numbers to 1,000, to add and subtract two-digit numbers with regrouping, to understand multiplication as equal groups and arrays and division as sharing, to find halves, quarters and eighths, to tell the time to five minutes, to use formal units for length and to work with money. In English the expectation shifts from decoding to fluency and understanding: reading with expression, answering literal and inferential questions, spelling with patterns (long vowels, common suffixes) rather than by memory, and writing paragraphs with a sequence of ideas.
The pressure point in Year 2 is invisible. There is no NAPLAN, no phonics check, and reports tend to be encouraging. But a child who leaves Year 2 without automatic decoding, without regrouping, and without the two, five and ten times tables walks into Year 3 NAPLAN and the Year 3 curriculum a step behind, and the step widens. We meet a lot of families in Year 4 who wish they had come in Year 2.

Year 2 maths is where the number system has to make sense. Regrouping only works for a child who understands that 10 ones are a ten, and multiplication only makes sense to a child who can see equal groups and arrays. Our Year 2 sessions use materials (bundles, base-ten blocks, arrays of counters) to build those ideas and then move to written methods, so the child knows why the algorithm works and can check an answer that looks wrong.

Year 2 English is about fluency and understanding. A Year 2 reader should read a levelled text with expression and answer questions that require inference (why did the character do that?) as well as recall. The Victorian Curriculum also expects Year 2 spelling to move to patterns: long vowel spellings, doubling before -ing, plurals, contractions. Our tutors hear the child read every session, teach one spelling pattern a week, and set a piece of writing (a recount, a narrative, an information text) that is planned, written and edited in the session.

Year 2 science looks at how living things grow and change, how materials can be combined and changed, water as a resource and pushes and pulls. We do not run separate Year 2 science sessions; the tutor may use a science text or a simple experiment write-up as the week's reading or writing task, which is good practice for the informative writing Year 3 expects.

A Year 2 session is an hour, one-to-one or, for a confident child, in a pair. It opens with reading aloud and a few comprehension questions, then a spelling pattern and ten minutes of writing, then maths: a two-minute facts sprint, the week's concept with materials, then written practice with the tutor watching. Every session ends with the tutor noting what is secure and sending you one thing to practise.
One-to-one is still our default for Year 2 reading, because the tutor needs to hear the child read. Maths in a pair or a group of three works well for many Year 2 children, and online is now realistic for maths if a parent sets up a camera on the page. By Term 4, a Year 2 child who is reading fluently can join a small Year 3 NAPLAN-readiness group.
For Year 2 we recommend one-to-one at $35 an hour; small groups (from $25 an hour) are available from Year 3. Across all year levels, small groups are from $25 an hour and one-to-one is $35 to $45 an hour, with VCE at the top of the range. Plans are monthly, you choose how many sessions a week, and you can cancel any time. The Skills Check and the consultation are free. Online and in-person sessions cost the same.
Here is a typical week for a Year 2 student doing two subjects with us. Most families run one session a week per subject; two a week is worth it in the term before NAPLAN, a scholarship or selective test, or the VCE exams.

Because Year 3 NAPLAN in March assumes Year 2 was secure: fluent reading, regrouping, simple fractions, times tables. Term 4 of Year 2 is the ideal time to find and fix gaps calmly, without turning Year 3 into a cram.
Very. Reading and spelling are related but different skills. Year 2 spelling depends on learning patterns and rules, which we teach one a week and practise in the child's own writing.
We go back to materials. Regrouping makes sense once a child has physically traded ten ones for a ten and can see it on paper. Most children get it in two or three sessions once it is taught that way.
The 2s, 5s and 10s, yes, by the end of the year, and the 3s started. We teach them with patterns and skip counting, then short daily practice until they are automatic.
For maths, a pair or a group of three works well. For reading we still recommend one-to-one so the tutor can hear the child read every session.
