This page is for parents of a Year 10 student (aged 15 and 16) weighing up tutoring. It covers what the curriculum expects this year, the milestones and pressure points, the topics we cover, how a Year 10 session runs, whether a small group or one-to-one suits this age, prices and a typical week. Year 10 is the last year of the Victorian Curriculum and the gateway to the VCE. The maths content is the bridge: factorising and solving quadratics, sketching parabolas, simultaneous equations, index and logarithm laws, trigonometry beyond right-angled triangles at some schools, surds, and statistics with bivariate data and conditional probability. English moves to VCE-style tasks: analytical text responses, argument analysis, and oral presentations, often marked with VCE-like criteria. Science splits into the strands that become VCE subjects: genetics, DNA and evolution; the periodic table, reaction types and rates; motion, Newton's laws and energy; and the origin and scale of the universe.
The pressure point is subject selection. In Term 3, Year 10 students choose their VCE subjects for Year 11, and for most families the hardest choice is Mathematical Methods versus General Mathematics, followed by which sciences. The choice depends on Year 10 results, on what the student wants to keep open (engineering, science, commerce and medicine pathways often require Methods), and on honest advice. Year 10 is also the year to prepare: students who use Term 4 for a Units 1 and 2 head start, especially in Methods, English and Chemistry, find Year 11 far less stressful than students who arrive cold.

Year 10 maths decides the VCE maths pathway. Factorising and solving quadratics by several methods, sketching parabolas, solving simultaneous equations, applying index and logarithm laws, working with surds, and using trigonometry in non-right-angled triangles at schools that cover it are the content, and Methods Units 1 and 2 assume all of it. Our Year 10 sessions follow the school's unit, check the Year 9 foundations first (linear graphs, expanding, factorising), and put real weight on algebraic fluency, because Methods rewards speed and accuracy in algebra above everything else.

Year 10 English is a rehearsal for VCE. Students write analytical text responses with a contention argued across an essay, analyse how persuasive texts (including visuals) position an audience, deliver an oral presentation on an issue, and at many schools write a creative piece with a written explanation. The Victorian Curriculum expects control of argument, evidence and language, and Year 10 teachers increasingly mark to VCE-like criteria. Our tutors teach essay planning from the topic, the analytical paragraph, argument analysis as a method, and timed writing, working on the school's set texts.

Year 10 science is where the VCE sciences are decided. Genetics, DNA and evolution lead into VCE Biology; the periodic table, reaction types, rates and the first mole calculations lead into VCE Chemistry; motion, Newton's laws and energy lead into VCE Physics; and the science inquiry skills (variables, uncertainty, graphing, evaluation) run through all three. Students who enter Year 11 Chemistry without confident mole calculations and unit conversions, or Physics without algebra and vectors, find Units 1 and 2 a shock. These are the topics our Year 10 tutors cover, by year level, drawn from the curriculum-aligned question banks that power the free Skills Check.
Year 10 sessions are an hour, one-to-one or in a small group of up to four at the same level. Maths hours run retrieval, the week's teaching point, guided practice with attention to algebraic setting out, and a short timed set; from Term 4 Methods-bound students add CAS calculator work. English hours produce an essay section or an argument analysis on the school's task, marked live to criteria. Science hours combine concept teaching on the current unit with exam-style questions and calculation drills for Chemistry and Physics. A progress note follows every session.
Small groups of up to four suit Year 10 maths and science well and are popular for the Term 4 head-start programs, where students at the same level prepare for the same Unit 1 and 2 subject together. One-to-one is better for English, for students well behind, and for students aiming at the top of Methods or a science who want extension. Online works well at Year 10 for every subject; students often prefer it, and the Truganina centre hosts holiday and head-start blocks.
For Year 10, small groups (up to four students at the same level) are from $25 an hour and one-to-one is $40–$45 an hour. Across all year levels, small groups are from $25 an hour and one-to-one is $35 to $45 an hour, with VCE at the top of the range. Plans are monthly, you choose how many sessions a week, and you can cancel any time. The Skills Check and the consultation are free. Online and in-person sessions cost the same.
Here is a typical week for a Year 10 student doing two subjects with us. Most families run one session a week per subject; two a week is worth it in the term before NAPLAN, a scholarship or selective test, or the VCE exams.

Methods if they are confident with algebra, want to keep science, engineering, commerce or medicine options open, and will practise regularly. General if algebra is a struggle and the pathway does not require Methods. We give a frank opinion after the Skills Check and a look at Year 10 results.
In Term 3 of Year 10 at most schools, with a window to change early in Year 11. It is worth talking to us before the selection, not after, so the decision is made with a clear view of the student's maths and writing.
Preparation for Units 1 and 2 in the subjects chosen: Methods algebra and CAS, English analytical writing and argument analysis, Chemistry moles and bonding, Physics motion and vectors. Students who do it find Year 11 much calmer.
Quadratics (factorising, solving, sketching), simultaneous equations, index and log laws, and algebraic fluency generally. For General, percentages, linear relationships and data. We check all of them in the Skills Check.
It depends on the goal. Chemistry and Physics need confident maths; Biology needs strong reading and writing. Medicine and health pathways often favour Chemistry with Biology; engineering favours Chemistry with Physics and Methods. We will talk it through honestly.
