This page is for parents of a Year 7 student (aged 12 and 13) weighing up tutoring. It covers what the curriculum expects this year, the milestones and pressure points, the topics we cover, how a Year 7 session runs, whether a small group or one-to-one suits this age, prices and a typical week. Year 7 is the biggest single change in a child's schooling. In primary, one teacher watched everything; in Year 7 there are six or more, each teaching a topic for a few weeks and moving on. The Victorian Curriculum for Year 7 assumes the primary work is done and moves fast: integers in all four operations, fractions, decimals and percentages used fluently, ratio, the first algebra (variables, expressions, simple equations), index notation for squares and cubes, angles and the area of triangles and parallelograms, volume of prisms, the Cartesian plane, mean, median and mode, and probability. English expects analytical responses to texts, persuasive and creative writing, and grammar used deliberately. Science becomes a subject in its own right, with classification, mixtures and separation, forces, and the Earth in space.
The pressure points are the transition itself and NAPLAN. Year 7 NAPLAN in March comes only weeks into secondary school, includes a calculator section in Numeracy for the first time, and assumes the Year 5 and 6 content. Students who arrive with shaky fractions or slow number facts feel it immediately in both maths and science. Year 7 is also when selective-entry preparation should begin for families aiming at the Year 8 exam, because the exam is pitched at Year 8 to 9 level and needs a year of build-up.

Year 7 maths is fast and assumes a lot. Integers (negative numbers in all four operations), fluent fractions, decimals and percentages, ratio, and the first algebra are all covered in the first two terms, and each topic is tested once before the class moves on. Our Year 7 sessions follow the school's sequence so tutoring reinforces class, but the free Skills Check at the top of Year 6 level comes first, because most of the Year 7 students we meet are struggling with Year 5 and 6 content (fractions, decimals, number facts) rather than with Year 7 content itself.

Year 7 English asks for something new: analysis. Instead of retelling the story, students are expected to explain how the author has built a character or a mood, to write a text response with a contention and evidence, to write persuasively with techniques they can name, and to write creatively with structure and control. Our Year 7 tutors teach an explicit analytical paragraph (point, evidence, explanation of the technique, link to the question) and practise it on the school's set text, so the improvement shows up in the next assessment.

Year 7 science covers classification of living things, mixtures and separation techniques, forces and simple machines, the Earth, sun and moon, and the water cycle and renewable resources, with science inquiry skills (variables, fair testing, tables and graphs, practical reports) running through all of it. It is the first subject many students meet where the mark depends on writing a scientific explanation, and it is where 'I understood it but did badly on the test' first appears. Our Year 7 science sessions teach the concept and then the explanation: how to read the command word, how many marks the question is worth, and how to write exactly that much.

These are the topics our Year 7 tutors cover, by year level, drawn from the curriculum-aligned question banks that power the free Skills Check.
Year 7 sessions are an hour, one-to-one or in a small group of up to four at the same level. A maths hour opens with ten minutes of retrieval on earlier topics, moves to the week's teaching point (following the school's unit) with worked examples, then guided and independent practice with the tutor watching the working. English hours are built around a piece of analytical or persuasive writing on the school's text, marked in the session. Science hours pair concept teaching with exam-style questions and, when one is due, a practical report. After every session you get a progress note; homework is short and specific, because Year 7 students already have plenty.
Small groups of up to four at the same level are the most popular Year 7 format and work well for maths and science. One-to-one suits English (where the work is the student's own writing), students more than a year behind, and selective-entry preparation. Online works well for all three subjects at Year 7, and many families mix: online during the week, in person at Truganina before a test or for holiday programs.
For Year 7, small groups (up to four students at the same level) are from $25 an hour and one-to-one is $35–$40 an hour. Across all year levels, small groups are from $25 an hour and one-to-one is $35 to $45 an hour, with VCE at the top of the range. Plans are monthly, you choose how many sessions a week, and you can cancel any time. The Skills Check and the consultation are free. Online and in-person sessions cost the same.
Here is a typical week for a Year 7 student doing two subjects with us. Most families run one session a week per subject; two a week is worth it in the term before NAPLAN, a scholarship or selective test, or the VCE exams.

This is the most common reason families first contact us. Usually there are one or two primary gaps (fractions, number facts) that a single teacher used to work around, plus the shock of six teachers and no one checking. Both respond quickly to targeted sessions and a bit of organisation coaching.
It is sat in March, weeks into secondary school, and Numeracy has a calculator section. The content assumes Year 5 and 6, so we prepare by checking and fixing those, then practising NAPLAN-style questions on screen.
Year 7, for the exam sat in June of Year 8. The exam is pitched at Year 8 to 9 level with reasoning sections and timed writing, so a year of build-up makes a real difference.
Within sessions, yes: the tutor checks the diary, helps plan the week, and shows the student how to prepare for a topic test. We do not run separate study-skills courses; the habits are built into subject tutoring.
