Werribee is the established heart of Wyndham, with older primary schools, the region's selective-entry school (Suzanne Cory High School) and several large secondary colleges. We see two very different groups from Werribee: primary students working towards the selective-entry or scholarship exams, and VCE students at the secondary colleges who want structured exam preparation.

English tutor for Werribee families

The English tutoring we do for Werribee families changes shape with the year level. Prep to Year 2 is systematic phonics, fluency and hearing the child read every session. Years 3 to 6 is comprehension (finding evidence, inferring, summarising) and structured writing, the two things NAPLAN assesses. Years 7 to 10 is the move from retelling to analysing: how an author builds meaning, how a writer builds an argument. VCE English is text response, comparative and argument analysis, with a timed essay every week.

Sessions are built around writing, not just talking about writing. A typical hour includes a short comprehension or vocabulary task, one explicit teaching point (embedding a quotation, using a topic sentence, varying sentence openings), a piece of writing done in the session, and immediate marking against the criteria a teacher would use. Students keep a running list of their own recurring errors and watch it shrink. Homework is short: a reading task and a paragraph, or a Mastery Booklet on the week's skill.

Two patterns come up constantly in Werribee: the child who reads a lot but writes poorly, and the child for whom English is a second language at home. They need different tutoring. The first needs explicit teaching of how to plan, structure and edit; the second needs the mechanics of English (tense, articles, sentence structure) taught patiently alongside reading. The Skills Check tells us which, and the tutor is matched accordingly.

One-to-one English is $35 to $45 an hour by year level and is the format we use for Prep to Year 2 (the tutor must hear the child read) and for VCE essay work. Small groups of three to five from $25 an hour run for Years 3 to 10, grouped by level. Both are available at our Truganina centre and online; online English works well because the writing is shared on screen and marked live.

Students from Werribee Secondary College, Suzanne Cory High School, Wyndham Central College, Werribee Primary School and MacKillop Catholic Regional College make up most of our Werribee after-school intake. We are independent of all of them; we simply know what they teach and when they test. From Werribee it is about 15 minutes to 17/47 Apex Drive, Truganina VIC 3029, along the Princes Freeway or Hoppers Lane. The centre is also about four minutes from Tarneit station, which is the easiest option for secondary students who travel on their own after school. There is free parking right outside 17/47 Apex Drive; most parents drop off, do the shopping at Tarneit or Truganina and come back.

After-school sessions at the centre run from 3:30 pm to 7 pm Monday to Thursday and 3:30 pm to 6 pm on Friday. In practice for Werribee families the 4:30 pm and 5 pm slots are the most popular, because the 15-minute drive after a 3:15 pm school finish makes 3:30 pm too tight. Sessions are an hour, and students who arrive early sit in the quiet room and start their homework.

Pricing

One-to-one tutoring is $35–$45 an hour depending on the year level; small groups of up to five are from $25 an hour. Plans are monthly, you choose how many sessions a week, and you can cancel any time. The Skills Check and the consultation are free. Online and in-person sessions cost the same.

Frequently asked questions

Can the tutor help with the novel my child is studying at school?

Yes. Bring the text and the essay question; the tutor works on that. Practising analysis on the set text is the fastest way to lift the next assessment.

Do you teach spelling and grammar?

Yes. Primary sessions include phonics, spelling patterns and grammar every week. Secondary sessions teach grammar and punctuation in context, marking the student's own writing and teaching the rule where the error appears.

How long before writing improves?

Structural improvements (paragraphing, answering the question) usually show within four to six sessions. Vocabulary, sentence variety and spelling improve more gradually and depend on reading at home, which we set as homework.

Where is the English tutoring held for Werribee families?

At our Truganina centre, 17/47 Apex Drive, Truganina VIC 3029, about 15 minutes from Werribee (along the Princes Freeway or Hoppers Lane), or online with the same tutor. The centre is four minutes from Tarneit station with free parking outside.

What does it cost?

Small groups of three to five students are from $25 an hour. One-to-one is $35 to $45 an hour depending on year level, with VCE at the top of the range. The Skills Check and the consultation are free, plans are monthly and you can cancel any time.

How do we start?

Your child does the free online Skills Check (10 to 15 minutes, at home). A tutor calls you for a free consultation, goes through the result and recommends a format and a starting point. Nothing is charged until you decide to go ahead.
