RHZ Tutoring is a local, independent centre at 17/47 Apex Drive, Truganina VIC 3029, rated 5.0 on Google from 34 reviews, and Manor Lakes is one of the suburbs we see most. Here is how our English tutoring works for Manor Lakes families: what happens in a session, when and where it runs, what it costs and how to start.

English tutor for Manor Lakes families

English gaps hide better than maths gaps. A Manor Lakes child can read aloud fluently and understand little of it; a Year 9 can write two pages and never answer the question. An English tutor's first job is to separate the four skills (decoding, comprehension, writing and grammar) and find which one is the problem. Our free English Skills Check does exactly that, so the tutor starts on the right skill in the first session.

An English hour with us always contains writing done on the spot and marked on the spot, because that is where improvement is visible. The tutor teaches one thing explicitly, the student uses it in a paragraph or an essay plan, and the tutor marks it the way the school marks. Recurring errors go on the student's own list. For secondary students we work on the actual set text and the actual essay topic, so the improvement shows in the next assessment, not in a generic exercise.

For students who speak another language at home, common across Manor Lakes, the tutor slows down on the mechanics: tense, articles, prepositions, sentence structure, and lots of guided reading, before moving to essay structure. For strong readers with weak writing, which is the most common pattern we see, the work is almost entirely on planning, paragraphing and editing. For strong students we extend into scholarship-style writing and Year 10 texts that lead into VCE.

Pricing: one-to-one $35 an hour for primary, $35 to $40 for Years 7 and 8, $40 for Year 9, $40 to $45 for Year 10, $45 for VCE English; small groups from $25 an hour from Year 3. Monthly, cancellable, with the Skills Check and consultation free. Online sessions cost the same and the tutor marks the writing live on screen.

After the bell, most of the students walking into the centre from Manor Lakes come from Manor Lakes P-12 College, Lollypop Creek Primary School, Wyndham Vale Primary School and Iramoo Primary School. Tutors see the same schools' worksheets and tests week after week, so they recognise the sequence a class is on. The drive from Manor Lakes (3024) to our centre at 17/47 Apex Drive, Truganina VIC 3029 takes about 20 minutes, via Ballan Road and Leakes Road. The centre is also about four minutes from Tarneit station, which is the easiest option for secondary students who travel on their own after school. Parking is free and directly outside the centre, which matters at 3:30 pm when you are doing a school pick-up and a tutoring drop-off in the same trip.

After-school sessions at the centre run from 3:30 pm to 7 pm Monday to Thursday and 3:30 pm to 6 pm on Friday. In practice for Manor Lakes families the 4:30 pm and 5 pm slots are the most popular, because the 20-minute drive after a 3:15 pm school finish makes 3:30 pm too tight. Sessions are an hour, and students who arrive early sit in the quiet room and start their homework.

How it works

1
Free Skills Check. Start with the free Skills Check: a short online diagnostic, done at home, that shows topic by topic where your child sits against their year level.
2
Free consultation. A tutor calls you for a free consultation, walks through the result and recommends a plan: 1:1 or small group, in person or online. No card, no lock-in.
3
Targeted sessions. Your child is matched with a tutor and sessions start, at the Truganina centre or online. After each session you receive a short note on what was covered and what is next.

Pricing

Small-group sessions (three to five students of a similar level) are from $25 an hour. One-to-one sessions are $35 to $45 an hour depending on year level, with VCE at the top of that range. Plans are monthly, you choose how many sessions a week, and you can cancel any time. The Skills Check and the consultation are free. Online and in-person sessions cost the same.

Frequently asked questions

Can the tutor help with the novel my child is studying at school?

Yes. Bring the text and the essay question; the tutor works on that. Practising analysis on the set text is the fastest way to lift the next assessment.

Do you teach spelling and grammar?

Yes. Primary sessions include phonics, spelling patterns and grammar every week. Secondary sessions teach grammar and punctuation in context, marking the student's own writing and teaching the rule where the error appears.

How long before writing improves?

Structural improvements (paragraphing, answering the question) usually show within four to six sessions. Vocabulary, sentence variety and spelling improve more gradually and depend on reading at home, which we set as homework.

Where is the English tutoring held for Manor Lakes families?

At our Truganina centre, 17/47 Apex Drive, Truganina VIC 3029, about 20 minutes from Manor Lakes (via Ballan Road and Leakes Road), or online with the same tutor. The centre is four minutes from Tarneit station with free parking outside.

What does it cost?

Small groups of three to five students are from $25 an hour. One-to-one is $35 to $45 an hour depending on year level, with VCE at the top of the range. The Skills Check and the consultation are free, plans are monthly and you can cancel any time.

How do we start?

Your child does the free online Skills Check (10 to 15 minutes, at home). A tutor calls you for a free consultation, goes through the result and recommends a format and a starting point. Nothing is charged until you decide to go ahead.
