Tutoring for Al-Taqwa College Students

Parents of Al-Taqwa College students find us by word of mouth more than any other way, and they usually ask the same practical questions: what year levels, which subjects, how far, what time, how much. This page answers them. To be clear at the outset, RHZ Tutoring is not affiliated with Al-Taqwa College; we are an independent centre in Truganina.

Year levels at Al-Taqwa College and what matters in each

This page speaks generally about primary and secondary year levels rather than describing Al-Taqwa College's own structure, which the school itself is the authority on. We tutor Prep to Year 12, so whichever years the school offers, there is a tutor for them.

Prep and Year 1: phonics, early reading and early number, where a small gap is easiest to fix and most often missed in a big class.
NAPLAN in March for Year 3, Year 5, Year 7 and Year 9: we secure the year's content and spend a few sessions on the format and the writing genres rather than drilling past papers.
Years 5 and 6: independent-school scholarship tests and the move to secondary school, which assumes fluent number facts, fractions and structured writing.
The Year 6 to Year 7 transition inside the same school: fewer changes than moving school, but the same jump in pace and independence.
Year 8: the selective-entry test (sat in Year 8 for Year 9 entry) for families considering it, and the Year 8 algebra and indices that Year 9 assumes.
Years 9 and 10: the acceleration in maths (linear graphs, trigonometry, quadratics) and the shift in English to analysis, ending with the Methods-versus-General decision and VCE subject selection.
VCE Units 1 to 4: SACs across the year, the GAT in June, and the written exams from late October into November; we work to the study design for each subject.

Subjects we tutor for Al-Taqwa College students

How RHZ works alongside Al-Taqwa College

We work alongside the school's program, not against it. The school sets the sequence of topics, the texts and the assessments; our tutor follows that sequence so tutoring reinforces class, and uses the free Skills Check to find the earlier skill that is holding a student back, which is usually the thing the class does not have time to revisit. When a student at Al-Taqwa College brings the latest school test to a session, the tutor marks the way the school marked and plans from the errors.

We are independent of Al-Taqwa College and of every other school. We do not have access to the school's internal materials, we do not speak for its teachers, and we make no claims about its results. What we have is experience: our tutors have taught many students from Truganina schools and recognise the pace and assessment style, and every tutor is local and holds a valid Working with Children Check.

Getting from Al-Taqwa College to the centre

Getting here from Truganina: our centre is on Apex Drive, off Leakes Road, about four minutes from Tarneit station. Secondary students often come by train (the centre is four minutes from Tarneit station); primary students are usually dropped off after school pick-up, and parking outside is free.

Our after-school window is 3:30 pm to 7 pm Monday to Thursday and 3:30 pm to 6 pm on Friday, in one-hour sessions. As a rule the 3:30 pm slot is realistic for students from Al-Taqwa College because the school run and the tutoring run are the same trip. The last session of the day starts at 6 pm (5 pm on Fridays).

Pricing is the same for every school: from $25 an hour in a small group of three to five at the same level, and $35 to $45 an hour one-to-one by year level. No. RHZ Tutoring is not affiliated with Al-Taqwa College and has no arrangement with it. We are an independent tutoring centre in Truganina; students from the school come to us privately, and we teach to the Victorian Curriculum and the VCE study designs rather than to any one school's program.

We plan from the Victorian Curriculum, which the school also plans from, and within that we follow the free Skills Check result. The centre is in Truganina at 17/47 Apex Drive, Truganina VIC 3029, our centre is on Apex Drive, off Leakes Road, about four minutes from Tarneit station. Free parking outside; older students can walk or travel from Tarneit station (four minutes away).

What time are after-school sessions?

From 3:30 pm to 7 pm Monday to Thursday and 3:30 pm to 6 pm on Friday, in one-hour blocks. Students from Al-Taqwa College usually take a 3:30 pm or 4 pm slot. Any session can also run online with the same tutor.
