Tutoring for Sunshine College Students

Parents of Sunshine College students find us by word of mouth more than any other way, and they usually ask the same practical questions: what year levels, which subjects, how far, what time, how much. This page answers them. To be clear at the outset, RHZ Tutoring is not affiliated with Sunshine College; we are an independent centre in Truganina.

Year levels at Sunshine College and what matters in each

We do not make claims about which year levels or programs Sunshine College offers; check that with the school. What we can say is that we tutor every year from Prep to Year 12, so a student at Sunshine College can be matched with a tutor for their level whatever it is.

Prep and Year 1: phonics, early reading and early number, where a small gap is easiest to fix and most often missed in a big class.
NAPLAN in March for Year 3, Year 5, Year 7 and Year 9: we secure the year's content and spend a few sessions on the format and the writing genres rather than drilling past papers.
Years 5 and 6: independent-school scholarship tests and the move to secondary school, which assumes fluent number facts, fractions and structured writing.
The Year 6 to Year 7 transition inside the same school: fewer changes than moving school, but the same jump in pace and independence.
Year 8: the selective-entry test (sat in Year 8 for Year 9 entry) for families considering it, and the Year 8 algebra and indices that Year 9 assumes.
Years 9 and 10: the acceleration in maths (linear graphs, trigonometry, quadratics) and the shift in English to analysis, ending with the Methods-versus-General decision and VCE subject selection.
VCE Units 1 to 4: SACs across the year, the GAT in June, and the written exams from late October into November; we work to the study design for each subject.

How RHZ works alongside Sunshine College

The school teaches; we make sure the teaching lands. Our tutors plan from the Victorian Curriculum, which is the same document Sunshine College plans from, so the topics line up. Within that, the tutor works from the Skills Check result and from the student's own school work: the set text, the topic test, the assessment rubric. Where a student has a gap from an earlier year, we go back and fix it even though the class has moved on, because that is what a class cannot do.

Because we are not affiliated with Sunshine College, we cannot and do not tell you how the school ranks, what its results are or how its program compares with another school's. Getting from Sunshine College to the centre

From Sunshine College in Derrimut the drive to our centre at 17/47 Apex Drive, Truganina VIC 3029 is about 12 minutes, straight along Boundary Road. The centre is about four minutes from Tarneit station, and there is free parking at the door.

After-school sessions at the centre run from 3:30 pm to 7 pm Monday to Thursday and 3:30 pm to 6 pm on Friday. In practice for families at Sunshine College the 4:30 pm and 5 pm slots are the most popular, because the 12-minute drive after a 3:15 pm school finish makes 3:30 pm too tight. Sessions are an hour, and students who arrive early sit in the quiet room and start their homework.

Pricing for Sunshine College students

Small groups of three to five students at the same level are from $25 an hour; one-to-one is $35 to $45 an hour depending on year level, with VCE at the top. Groups are formed by level, so a student from Sunshine College may sit with students from other Derrimut schools working on the same skill. Online sessions cost the same and use the same tutor.

No. RHZ Tutoring is not affiliated with Sunshine College and has no arrangement with it. We are an independent tutoring centre in Truganina; students from the school come to us privately, and we teach to the Victorian Curriculum and the VCE study designs rather than to any one school's program.
