Manor Lakes is one of the newest estates in Wyndham, built around Manor Lakes P-12 College, which is one of the largest schools in the state. With that many students in a single school, families often tell us their child is doing fine on the report but they are not sure what that means. A twenty-minute drive is doable, but many Manor Lakes families take the online option and keep the drive for exam-time revision days.

Primary school tutoring for Manor Lakes families

The primary schools in Manor Lakes are large, and a large class is exactly where a quiet gap goes unnoticed for a term or two. That is the gap we look for: a Year 4 who still counts on their fingers, a Year 2 who guesses words from the first letter, a Year 6 who writes long pieces with no paragraphs. Our free Skills Check, pitched at the top of the year level, finds it, and our primary tutors are trained to rebuild the foundation with short, frequent practice rather than worksheets.

In Prep to Year 2 we work one-to-one, because the tutor needs to hear the child read and watch them count every session. Reading is systematic phonics, decodable texts and fluency; maths is counting, subitising, place value and the first number facts, taught with counters, cards and games. Sessions are forty-five minutes to an hour with plenty of variety, and the homework is five to ten minutes a night: a decodable reader or a few number facts.

In Years 3 to 6 the focus shifts to fluency and structure: automatic number facts, fractions and decimals, worded problems; and in English, comprehension, spelling and grammar, and how to plan and write a paragraph and then a whole piece. Groups of three to five at the same level are from $25 an hour; one-to-one is $35. NAPLAN in Years 3 and 5 is handled with a few sessions on format on top of the normal work; scholarship and selective-entry preparation in Years 5 and 6 is a separate, longer program.

Students from Manor Lakes P-12 College, Lollypop Creek Primary School, Wyndham Vale Primary School, Iramoo Primary School and Wyndham Central College make up most of our Manor Lakes after-school intake. We are independent of all of them; we simply know what they teach and when they test.

Manor Lakes to our Truganina centre at 17/47 Apex Drive, Truganina VIC 3029 is about 20 minutes by car, via Ballan Road and Leakes Road. The centre is also about four minutes from Tarneit station, which is the easiest option for secondary students who travel on their own after school. Parking is free and directly outside the centre, which matters at 3:30 pm when you are doing a school pick-up and a tutoring drop-off in the same trip. After-school sessions at the centre run from 3:30 pm to 7 pm Monday to Thursday and 3:30 pm to 6 pm on Friday. In practice for Manor Lakes families the 4:30 pm and 5 pm slots are the most popular, because the 20-minute drive after a 3:15 pm school finish makes 3:30 pm too tight. Sessions are an hour, and students who arrive early sit in the quiet room and start their homework.

What age can a child start tutoring?

From Prep. Prep to Year 2 sessions are one-to-one, shorter and hands-on, and are usually about phonics and early number. Most families in Manor Lakes start between Year 3 and Year 5, when a gap becomes visible.

Do you prepare primary students for NAPLAN?

Yes, for Years 3 and 5: we make sure the year's content is secure, spend a few sessions on the test format and on persuasive and narrative writing, and treat the March test as a check rather than a target.

Do you do scholarship and selective-entry preparation?

Yes, for Year 5 and 6 students aiming at independent-school scholarships or the selective-entry test: a three-to-six-month run-up with weekly timed practice in reasoning and writing, and honest feedback on where the child sits.
