Laverton is one of the older suburbs on our side of the west, with a mix of long-standing families and newer arrivals. Laverton P-12 College takes students from Prep right through to VCE, so we often support a family through several year levels with the same tutor.
There are four kinds of exam our Laverton students prepare for: school topic tests and semester exams, VCE School-Assessed Coursework (SACs) and the end-of-year VCE exams, NAPLAN in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9, and the selective-entry and scholarship tests. Each has a different timeline, and the mistake families make is treating them all the same: starting too late for VCE and too early, with the wrong material, for NAPLAN.
School exams and topic tests: the timeline is the term. In the first weeks the tutor follows the class and makes sure each topic is secure as it is taught, because a semester exam covers everything. Four weeks out we switch to mixed revision, where the student has to decide which method applies rather than being told. Two weeks out we run timed practice under exam conditions, usually with the school's own past papers where they exist, and mark the way the school marks. The last week is short, targeted fixes, not new content.
For VCE students the year is a chain of SACs ending in the November exams, so preparation cannot be a single burst. Each SAC gets a two-to-three-week run-up of SAC-style questions built from the study design. From mid-year the tutor introduces past VCAA papers, by section at first and then full timed papers, and for Methods, Specialist and General the bound reference is built week by week. English students write timed essays weekly from Term 2. The last month is past papers, marked against the VCAA criteria, with a short list of marks recovered each week.
NAPLAN (Years 3, 5, 7 and 9, in March) and the selective-entry and scholarship tests need a different approach again. NAPLAN preparation is mostly making sure the year's curriculum is secure, plus a few sessions on the test format and on persuasive and narrative writing; we do not drill past papers for months. The selective-entry test for Year 9 entry and the scholarship tests for independent schools are more competitive and reward reasoning under time, so the run-up is longer, three to six months, with weekly timed practice on numerical, verbal and abstract reasoning and on writing.
The drive from Laverton (3028) to our centre at 17/47 Apex Drive, Truganina VIC 3029 takes about 12 minutes, via Dohertys Road or Boundary Road. The centre is also about four minutes from Tarneit station, which is the easiest option for secondary students who travel on their own after school. There is free parking right outside 17/47 Apex Drive; most parents drop off, do the shopping at Tarneit or Truganina and come back. Exam-time blocks for Laverton students can be booked across mornings, afternoons and holidays, and online sessions with the same tutor fill any gap the drive cannot.
After-school sessions at the centre run from 3:30 pm to 7 pm Monday to Thursday and 3:30 pm to 6 pm on Friday. In practice for Laverton families the 4:30 pm and 5 pm slots are the most popular, because the 12-minute drive after a 3:15 pm school finish makes 3:30 pm too tight. Sessions are an hour, and students who arrive early sit in the quiet room and start their homework.

School exams: the whole term, with timed practice in the last fortnight. VCE: from the start of the year for SACs, with past VCAA papers from mid-year. NAPLAN: a few sessions on format on top of normal tutoring. Selective-entry and scholarship tests: three to six months.
Yes, where they exist: the school's own past papers for school exams, past VCAA papers for VCE, and reasoning-style practice for selective-entry and scholarship tests. The tutor marks them the way the examiner would and keeps a record of the marks lost and why.
Within sessions, yes. Most exam anxiety is about not knowing what will come up; structured timed practice, marked and discussed, is the most reliable fix we know. The tutor also teaches simple exam routines: reading time, question order, what to do when stuck.
