RHZ Tutoring is a local, independent centre at 17/47 Apex Drive, Truganina VIC 3029, rated 5.0 on Google from 34 reviews, and Laverton is one of the suburbs we see most. Here is how our high school tutoring works for Laverton families: what happens in a session, when and where it runs, what it costs and how to start.

High school tutoring for Laverton families

High school tutoring in Laverton starts, more often than not, with the Year 7 transition. The move from one primary teacher to seven secondary teachers, faster topics and independent assessment exposes any primary gap within a term. Our Year 7 and 8 work is mostly rebuilding fractions, place value and negative numbers in maths, and teaching analytical rather than retelling paragraphs in English, while keeping pace with the class.

Junior secondary sessions (Years 7 to 10) cover maths, English and science in the order the school teaches them, with the tutor backfilling primary skills as needed. By Year 10 the maths sessions are explicitly preparing for Methods or General and the English sessions are writing full text responses and argument analyses, so that Unit 1 in Year 11 is not a shock. Year 10 students can also start the VCE 2027 Head Start in Term 4.

For VCE (Years 11 and 12) each subject is taught by a tutor who knows that study design. Sessions are exam-focused from the start: SAC-style questions two to three weeks before each SAC, past VCAA papers from mid-year, bound-reference building across the year for the maths subjects, and a timed essay every week for English. We are honest with students about the marks they are leaving on the table and how to recover them, and the progress note after each session says so.

Laverton students at the centre attend Laverton P-12 College, Altona Meadows Primary School, Seabrook Primary School, Point Cook Senior Secondary College and Truganina South Primary School. A tutor will always ask for the latest school test or assessment rubric, because that is the fastest way to see how a particular school marks.

From Laverton it is about 12 minutes to 17/47 Apex Drive, Truganina VIC 3029, via Dohertys Road or Boundary Road. The centre is also about four minutes from Tarneit station, which is the easiest option for secondary students who travel on their own after school. There is free parking right outside 17/47 Apex Drive; most parents drop off, do the shopping at Tarneit or Truganina and come back. The centre opens for after-school tutoring from 3:30 pm to 7 pm Monday to Thursday and 3:30 pm to 6 pm on Friday. We find that for Laverton families the 4:30 pm and 5 pm slots are the most popular, because the 12-minute drive after a 3:15 pm school finish makes 3:30 pm too tight. If a day does not work, the same session can run online with the same tutor.

How it works

1
Free Skills Check. Start with the free Skills Check: a short online diagnostic, done at home, that shows topic by topic where your child sits against their year level.
2
Free consultation. A tutor calls you for a free consultation, walks through the result and recommends a plan: 1:1 or small group, in person or online. No card, no lock-in.
3
Targeted sessions. Your child is matched with a tutor and sessions start, at the Truganina centre or online. After each session you receive a short note on what was covered and what is next.

Pricing

Small-group sessions (three to five students of a similar level) are from $25 an hour. One-to-one sessions are $35 to $45 an hour depending on year level, with VCE at the top of that range. Plans are monthly, you choose how many sessions a week, and you can cancel any time. The Skills Check and the consultation are free. Online and in-person sessions cost the same.

Frequently asked questions

Which subjects do you tutor for high school?

Maths, English and science for Years 7 to 10, and Mathematical Methods, General Maths, Specialist Maths, English, Chemistry, Physics and Biology for VCE.

My child is in Year 7 and struggling with the transition. Can you help?

Yes; it is the most common reason Laverton families first contact us. We usually find one or two primary gaps in maths and an unfamiliarity with analytical writing in English, both of which respond quickly to targeted work.

How early should VCE preparation start?

Term 4 of Year 10 is the sweet spot, which is when our VCE 2027 Head Start runs: a free VCE Skills Check, free consultation and first session free, then a Unit 1 and 2 head start through Term 4 and January.

Where is the high school tutoring held for Laverton families?

At our Truganina centre, 17/47 Apex Drive, Truganina VIC 3029, about 12 minutes from Laverton (via Dohertys Road or Boundary Road), or online with the same tutor. The centre is four minutes from Tarneit station with free parking outside.

What does it cost?

Small groups of three to five students are from $25 an hour. One-to-one is $35 to $45 an hour depending on year level, with VCE at the top of the range. The Skills Check and the consultation are free, plans are monthly and you can cancel any time.

How do we start?

Your child does the free online Skills Check (10 to 15 minutes, at home). A tutor calls you for a free consultation, goes through the result and recommends a format and a starting point. Nothing is charged until you decide to go ahead.
