RHZ Tutoring is a local, independent centre at 17/47 Apex Drive, Truganina VIC 3029, rated 5.0 on Google from 34 reviews, and Laverton is one of the suburbs we see most. Here is how our small-group classes works for Laverton families: what happens in a session, when and where it runs, what it costs and how to start.

Small-group tutoring classes for Laverton families

Our small-group classes are the most popular format for Laverton primary and junior secondary students, and the reason is not only price. A group of three to five students at the same level, with one tutor, has a pace: students see each other work, hear each other's mistakes explained, and tend to try harder than they would alone. The tutor still watches every student's working, still writes an individual progress note, and still steps back a year for one student when the Skills Check says so.

We group by level rather than by school, so a Laverton student's classmates may come from Altona Meadows, Williams Landing and Truganina. The Skills Check decides placement: a Year 8 who is strong in number but weak in algebra goes into a group working on algebra, not simply a Year 8 group. Groups are reviewed each term and students move when their needs change. Siblings at different levels are booked at the same time in different groups so there is one trip.

Small-group pricing is from $25 an hour, compared with $35 to $45 for one-to-one. Plans are monthly, you choose one or two sessions a week, and you can cancel any time. Online groups run at the same price and the same size, with the same tutor, on a live video session where each student shares their working. Groups are available from Year 3; Prep to Year 2 reading and number work is one-to-one so the tutor can hear the child read and count every session.

After the bell, most of the students walking into the centre from Laverton come from Laverton P-12 College, Altona Meadows Primary School, Seabrook Primary School and Point Cook Senior Secondary College. Tutors see the same schools' worksheets and tests week after week, so they recognise the sequence a class is on.

Laverton to our Truganina centre at 17/47 Apex Drive, Truganina VIC 3029 is about 12 minutes by car, via Dohertys Road or Boundary Road. The centre is also about four minutes from Tarneit station, which is the easiest option for secondary students who travel on their own after school. There is free parking right outside 17/47 Apex Drive; most parents drop off, do the shopping at Tarneit or Truganina and come back. The centre opens for after-school tutoring from 3:30 pm to 7 pm Monday to Thursday and 3:30 pm to 6 pm on Friday. We find that for Laverton families the 4:30 pm and 5 pm slots are the most popular, because the 12-minute drive after a 3:15 pm school finish makes 3:30 pm too tight. If a day does not work, the same session can run online with the same tutor.

How it works

1
Free Skills Check. Start with the free Skills Check: a short online diagnostic, done at home, that shows topic by topic where your child sits against their year level.
2
Free consultation. A tutor calls you for a free consultation, walks through the result and recommends a plan: 1:1 or small group, in person or online. No card, no lock-in.
3
Targeted sessions. Your child is matched with a tutor and sessions start, at the Truganina centre or online. After each session you receive a short note on what was covered and what is next.

Pricing

Small-group sessions (three to five students of a similar level) are from $25 an hour. One-to-one sessions are $35 to $45 an hour depending on year level, with VCE at the top of that range. Plans are monthly, you choose how many sessions a week, and you can cancel any time. The Skills Check and the consultation are free. Online and in-person sessions cost the same.

Frequently asked questions

How big are the groups?

Three to five students at the same level with one tutor. Never more than five. Prep to Year 2 are one-to-one only.

Will my child be grouped with students from their school?

Sometimes, but groups are formed by level, not school. Laverton students often share a group with students from Altona Meadows and Williams Landing. If your child needs a different level, they move.

What if my child needs more attention than a group allows?

The tutor will tell you, and we will suggest one-to-one, or a mix (a group session plus a short one-to-one) for a term. The consultation after the Skills Check is where we recommend the starting format.

Where is the small-group classes held for Laverton families?

At our Truganina centre, 17/47 Apex Drive, Truganina VIC 3029, about 12 minutes from Laverton (via Dohertys Road or Boundary Road), or online with the same tutor. The centre is four minutes from Tarneit station with free parking outside.

What does it cost?

Small groups of three to five students are from $25 an hour. One-to-one is $35 to $45 an hour depending on year level, with VCE at the top of the range. The Skills Check and the consultation are free, plans are monthly and you can cancel any time.

How do we start?

Your child does the free online Skills Check (10 to 15 minutes, at home). A tutor calls you for a free consultation, goes through the result and recommends a format and a starting point. Nothing is charged until you decide to go ahead.
