Altona Meadows has good primary schools but no secondary college of its own, so students spread out to Laverton, Point Cook, Altona and the Catholic colleges for Years 7 to 12. That spread is one reason we anchor every session to the Victorian Curriculum rather than to one school's worksheets.

Homework help for Altona Meadows families

Most homework struggles are not about the homework. A Year 8 who cannot finish the algebra sheet is usually stuck on a Year 6 fractions skill; a Year 4 who takes an hour on a reading task is usually decoding rather than comprehending. Our homework help for Altona Meadows families is built on that idea: the tutor works through the set homework with your child, but the real job is to find the missing skill it reveals and teach it.

Here is the model. The student brings the week's homework, or a photo of it, to the session. The tutor does not do it for them and does not just check it: they sit alongside, ask the student to talk through each question, and mark the moment where the thinking breaks. That moment tells us which skill is missing. The rest of the hour is spent on that skill, and the homework itself is finished at the end, correctly, by the student.

Between sessions the student works from a Mastery Booklet chosen by the tutor. Booklets are short, single-skill units built from the same curriculum-aligned question banks as our free Skills Check: a worked example, a page of guided practice, a page of independent practice and a check at the end. They replace generic homework with the specific practice the school homework showed was needed, and they give the tutor a clean way to see, the following week, whether the skill has stuck.

Students from Altona Meadows Primary School, Queen of Peace Primary School, Seabrook Primary School, Laverton P-12 College and Point Cook Senior Secondary College make up most of our Altona Meadows after-school intake. We are independent of all of them; we simply know what they teach and when they test.

Altona Meadows to our Truganina centre at 17/47 Apex Drive, Truganina VIC 3029 is about 15 minutes by car, via Point Cook Road and the Princes Freeway, or Boundary Road. The centre is also about four minutes from Tarneit station, which is the easiest option for secondary students who travel on their own after school. There is free parking right outside 17/47 Apex Drive; most parents drop off, do the shopping at Tarneit or Truganina and come back.

After-school sessions at the centre run from 3:30 pm to 7 pm Monday to Thursday and 3:30 pm to 6 pm on Friday. In practice for Altona Meadows families the 4:30 pm and 5 pm slots are the most popular, because the 15-minute drive after a 3:15 pm school finish makes 3:30 pm too tight. Sessions are an hour, and students who arrive early sit in the quiet room and start their homework. Homework help is one-to-one for primary students and available in small groups from Year 3, where the tutor rotates between students working on their own school's tasks.

Frequently asked questions

Do you just help with homework, or do you teach?

Both, in that order. The tutor works through the school's homework with your child, finds where the thinking breaks, teaches the missing skill, and sets a Mastery Booklet for that skill as the week's practice.

What are Mastery Booklets?

Short, single-skill booklets built from our curriculum-aligned question banks: a worked example, guided practice, independent practice and a check. The tutor assigns one when homework exposes a gap, and checks it at the start of the next session.

Can the tutor help with any subject's homework?

Maths, English and science from Prep to Year 10, and the VCE subjects we tutor (Methods, General, Specialist, English, Chemistry, Physics, Biology). For other subjects the tutor can help with organisation and study approach but will say so honestly.

Where is the homework help held for Altona Meadows families?

At our Truganina centre, 17/47 Apex Drive, Truganina VIC 3029, about 15 minutes from Altona Meadows (via Point Cook Road and the Princes Freeway, or Boundary Road), or online with the same tutor. The centre is four minutes from Tarneit station with free parking outside.

What does it cost?

Small groups of three to five students are from $25 an hour. One-to-one is $35 to $45 an hour depending on year level, with VCE at the top of the range. The Skills Check and the consultation are free, plans are monthly and you can cancel any time.

How do we start?

Your child does the free online Skills Check (10 to 15 minutes, at home). A tutor calls you for a free consultation, goes through the result and recommends a format and a starting point. Nothing is charged until you decide to go ahead.
