Altona Meadows has good primary schools but no secondary college of its own, so students spread out to Laverton, Point Cook, Altona and the Catholic colleges for Years 7 to 12. That spread is one reason we anchor every session to the Victorian Curriculum rather than to one school's worksheets.

Small-group tutoring classes for Altona Meadows families

A small group at RHZ is three to five students, grouped by year level and by need, with one tutor for the hour. It is not a class of fifteen with a worksheet. Every student is placed from their free Skills Check so the group works on the same skills at roughly the same pace, and the tutor moves between them, watching working rather than marking at the end. For Altona Meadows families it is the format we suggest first for Years 3 to 10 at or near year level.

Groups are formed by level, not by suburb or by school, which is why Altona Meadows students sit with students from Seabrook, Laverton and Point Cook. A Year 6 maths group, for example, might have four students from three schools who all need fractions, decimals and problem solving; a Year 9 group might be working on linear graphs and trigonometry. If a student pulls ahead of the group or falls behind it, we move them; the group is a tool, not a fixed class.

A group session is from $25 an hour, monthly plan, no lock-in. Groups run for Years 3 to 12; Prep to Year 2 are one-to-one only. The same group can run online for a Altona Meadows student who cannot travel on a particular day, and some of our groups are fully online with students from across the west. Whichever format, the tutor writes an individual note for every student after every session.

Altona Meadows students at the centre attend Altona Meadows Primary School, Queen of Peace Primary School, Seabrook Primary School, Laverton P-12 College, Point Cook Senior Secondary College and Mount St Joseph Girls' College. A tutor will always ask for the latest school test or assessment rubric, because that is the fastest way to see how a particular school marks.

The drive from Altona Meadows (3028) to our centre at 17/47 Apex Drive, Truganina VIC 3029 takes about 15 minutes, via Point Cook Road and the Princes Freeway, or Boundary Road. The centre is also about four minutes from Tarneit station, which is the easiest option for secondary students who travel on their own after school. There is free parking right outside 17/47 Apex Drive; most parents drop off, do the shopping at Tarneit or Truganina and come back. The centre opens for after-school tutoring from 3:30 pm to 7 pm Monday to Thursday and 3:30 pm to 6 pm on Friday. We find that for Altona Meadows families the 4:30 pm and 5 pm slots are the most popular, because the 15-minute drive after a 3:15 pm school finish makes 3:30 pm too tight. If a day does not work, the same session can run online with the same tutor.

Frequently asked questions

How big are the groups?

Three to five students at the same level with one tutor. Never more than five. Prep to Year 2 are one-to-one only.

Will my child be grouped with students from their school?

Sometimes, but groups are formed by level, not school. Altona Meadows students often share a group with students from Seabrook and Laverton. If your child needs a different level, they move.

What if my child needs more attention than a group allows?

The tutor will tell you, and we will suggest one-to-one, or a mix (a group session plus a short one-to-one) for a term. The consultation after the Skills Check is where we recommend the starting format.
